Three years ago, we asked Lilongwe to spend a Sunday evening differently. No one really knew what The Sunday Soirée would become, including us. We simply believed that if we paid enough attention to the details, the music, the food, the people, the setting and the atmosphere, something meaningful would happen. Since then, every event has been an opportunity to test that belief. Different venues, different themes and different ideas, all guided by the same instinct: create experiences that people remember because of how they made them feel. The Sunday Soirée – AU-RCHEST-RA is the latest expression of that instinct, and undoubtedly the most ambitious.
It isn’t a replacement for what we’ve built over the last three years, nor is it an attempt to make everything bigger simply for the sake of it. It exists because every so often an idea comes along that deserves its own stage. For a long time, we’ve been fascinated by what happens when live musicians and DJs stop taking turns and start performing together. We’ve experimented with various instruments drifting over house music, percussionists joining DJ sets without warning, guitarists weaving melodies into dance records and vocalists appearing unexpectedly in the middle of a set. Those moments always felt like glimpses of something much larger. AU-RCHEST-RA is what happens when that idea is allowed to reach its full potential.
On 30 August, the BICC Amphitheatre becomes home to a production unlike anything we have presented before. A full live orchestra, live band, vocalists and DJs will perform together, as one evolving performance. The late afternoon unfolds as a curated lineup of sets, each one carrying the music continuously into the next. Strings rise beneath familiar house melodies before brass takes over. A vocalist enters where a synthesiser might once have been. Rhythms evolve instead of ending. Every arrangement has been written specifically for this performance, allowing the music to breathe as one continuous journey rather than a collection of individual performances.
The evening begins long before the first note is played. We have always believed that arriving at an event should feel like becoming part of it, which is why AU-RCHEST-RA opens with Aura, our interpretation of the modern gala entry. It is less about celebrity than presence, less about spectacle than atmosphere. Guests arrive through an experience shaped by architecture, conversation, photography and hospitality before gradually finding their place within the amphitheatre as daylight gives way to evening. Aura is not an opening act. It is the first movement of the story.
That same philosophy extends to how we are inviting people to dress. Every Sunday Soirée has carried its own visual language, and this year we found ourselves drawn to an idea we call Vieille Monnaie (click for pronunciation/translation). It is difficult to define because it is more a feeling than a trend. It borrows from different moments in history without belonging entirely to any one of them. The precision of the 1920s, the refinement of the 1950s, the confidence of the 1970s and the simplicity of contemporary tailoring all share something in common: they favour elegance that never needs to announce itself. We are not asking guests to recreate a particular era or follow strict rules. Instead, we are inviting everyone to interpret that quiet confidence in their own way, choosing pieces that feel timeless rather than temporary. If you’re looking for inspiration, we’ve been collecting references on our Pinterest board, not as instructions, but as a glimpse into the mood that inspired this year’s creative direction.
The choice of venue was equally deliberate. The BICC Amphitheatre is unlike any other performance space in Lilongwe. Its circular form naturally gathers people around the music, while the open sky gives the evening a sense of scale that no indoor venue could offer. For one night, the amphitheatre will be transformed by a purpose-built architectural stage that sits comfortably within the landscape while becoming its focal point after sunset. As the lights emerge from within the structure and the orchestra takes its place, the venue itself becomes part of the performance.
Much of what makes AU-RCHEST-RA special will remain a surprise for now. Some experiences are better discovered than explained, and over the coming weeks we’ll gradually reveal more of what we’ve been creating behind the scenes. What we can say is that No Name DJs & Friends will lead an evening unlike any we’ve attempted before, joined by an extraordinary collective of musicians who have embraced this project with the same curiosity that first inspired it.
